Best VPNs for US Sports Fans Traveling Abroad (2026)

Five VPNs side by side on the things that matter abroad: devices, refunds, TV apps and, once we have tested them, live-stream results.

This page compares five VPNs for sports fans abroad who follow US college sports. Where a conference sells a stream that works abroad, you don’t need a VPN at all; our college hockey guide shows which ones do. A VPN matters in two other cases: privacy on hotel, airport and café Wi-Fi, and fans who already pay for a US service and are traveling. In that second case, most US services’ terms forbid disguising your location (ESPN’s, for example), so the choice is yours. For college hockey, the VPN options on the college hockey guide list each service’s own rules first.

We have not run our own streaming tests yet, so this page does not name a winner. Below you get what we could check from each provider’s own pages: devices, refund windows and TV apps. Our own test results will be added here as we complete them. Until then, pick based on those facts and use the refund window to test with your own subscriptions.

What matters in a VPN for watching sports abroad

Speed for HD live streaming. A live game in HD needs a steady connection, not just a fast speed-test peak. Distance matters: a US server is a long way from Europe, Africa or Asia, so results depend a lot on where you are. We will publish only what we measure ourselves, on real hotel and home connections outside the US.

US server locations. You want servers in the US, ideally in more than one region. All five providers list servers in many US cities on their own websites. We don’t print city counts: the providers’ own pages disagree with each other and change often, and some “US” locations are virtual (the server sits in another country with a US address). Check the provider’s current list, or the app, before you buy.

Apps for TV and phone. Watching on a hotel TV usually means a streaming stick you brought, such as a Fire TV or Apple TV. A native VPN app on that device is much simpler than a router setup. The table lists what each vendor says it supports.

Simultaneous devices. Phone, laptop, tablet and a TV stick add up fast, especially for a family. Device limits range from 7 to unlimited.

Refund policy. This is your real test window. Every provider here offers a money-back period, but the rules differ: first purchase only, website purchases only, and app-store purchases usually have to be refunded through Apple or Google.

VPN refund details that trip people up

  • NordVPN: 30 days, for first-time buyers.
  • Surfshark: 30 days from the first purchase on its website. Renewals, gift cards and some reseller purchases are excluded.
  • ExpressVPN: 30 days, first-time users only. App Store purchases are refunded by Apple, not ExpressVPN.
  • Proton VPN: full refund within 30 days of the first purchase, once per user, to the original payment method. Cash and bank transfers are not refundable, and App Store or Google Play purchases follow those stores’ rules.
  • CyberGhost: 45 days on plans longer than one month, 14 days on monthly plans.

If you plan to test during your trip, buy directly from the provider’s website, start the clock close to your departure date, and note the date you bought.

Before you leave the US

  1. Install the VPN and your streaming apps on every device while you are still at home.
  2. Sign in to each streaming app once from home, so you are not stuck on a sign-in screen abroad.
  3. Check that you can reach your VPN provider’s support from abroad (live chat or email).

VPNs for sports fans abroad: FAQ

Do I need a VPN to watch college hockey abroad?

Not always. Where a conference sells a stream that works abroad, you don't need a VPN at all; our college hockey guide shows which conferences do. A VPN matters for privacy on hotel, airport and café Wi-Fi, and for fans who already pay for a US service and are traveling.

Can I use a VPN to watch college football abroad?

It depends on your streaming service's terms, and most US services' terms forbid disguising your location. If you already pay for a US service and are traveling, the choice is yours; check that service's terms first. A VPN is useful either way for privacy on public Wi-Fi.

Can I use a VPN with ESPN+?

ESPN's subscriber agreement forbids disguising your location, so using a VPN to watch ESPN from abroad goes against its terms. Our ESPN guide has the details.

Which VPN is best for sports fans abroad?

We haven't run our own streaming tests yet, so this page doesn't name a winner. Compare the five VPNs on devices, refund windows and TV apps, and use the refund window to test with your own subscriptions.
